Alexis Mac Allister has left Albion to join fellow European side Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.
The World-Cup winner joined the Seagulls in January 2019 and after spells out on loan at Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors, while the club obtained his work permit. After obtaining his work permit the midfielder linked up with the squad in January 2020.
In three seasons at the club Mac Allister made 112 appearances scoring 20 goals.
But despite having only played for Albion for three seasons in the Premier League, his name will go down in the history books for a number of reasons.
The first is he was part of the remarkable feat last season which saw the Seagulls record their height ever top-flight and Premier League finish (sixth), and secure European football for the first time in the club’s history. Mac Allister finished as the top scorer for Albion in the league (10) and in all competitions (12). To top off what has been an incredible season for the 24-year-old midfielder he lifted the World Cup with Argentina in December.
During those three seasons Mac Allister has grown from a player with huge potential to emerging himself as a key player for both club and country.
Mac Allister has also spoken of his gratitude to Albion for giving him his big chance in the Premier League and helping him to develop into the player he is today. That gratitude and mutual respect between the Argentinian and the club was clear to see following their final day defeat to Aston Villa last month. Mac Allister went over to applaud the travelling fans with the rest of the side but was rather emotional and had to be consoled by both Lewis Dunk and Roberto De Zerbi.
There has always been that feeling as the season has developed that the midfielder was unlucky to remain at the club next season.
Albion now face the task of trying to replace Mac Allister and find someone to replace his creativity, goals and overall game.
However, De Zerbi has already brought in Joao Pedro from Watford for a club-record fee who can play in the number ten role, either flank or up top.
But the 21-year-old has similar potential to Mac Allister and Albion will be hoping they can unlock that potential.
It will be interesting to see how the summer pans ahead of what is set to be an exciting campaign coming up for the club.
