Albion yesterday signed Brazilian centre half Igor Julio from Fiorentina on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old defender made 41 appearances in all competitions last season for Fiorentina and helped them to an eighth place finish in Serie A and reach the final of the Europa Conference League where they lost 2-1 to West Ham.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi speaking on Tuesday ahead of Brighton’s Premier League Summer Series clash with Brentford, was full of praise for Igor: “Igor is a good player.
“I think he has the right quality, the right characteristics to play in the Premier League because it is a different league, a different competition.
“He can be the right player for us to complete the squad and to be important for us.”
But with Igor joining what does that mean for the Seagulls pursuit of Levi Colwill?
Well Albion are still keen on making Colwill a permanent member of their squad, following an impressive loan spell on the South Coast last season.
However, they have already had a bid of £30 million rejected for the England-U21 international last month.
New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been impressed with Colwill and believes he has a bright future ahead of him.
Pochettino started with a strong side in their win over Albion on Sunday morning, with Colwill starting alongside Thiago Silva at the heart of the defence.
Chelsea have made it clear that Colwill is not for sale. Colwill’s chances of game time this season have been massively boosted with the departures of Cesar Azpilicueta, Kalidou Koulibaly and the cruciate ligament injury suffered by Wesley Fofana.
It will be interesting to see whether Brighton continue to pursuit Colwill in the coming weeks.
