Albion and Tony Bloom have once again triumphed in the transfer market having sold midfielder Moises Caicedo for a British record transfer fee of £115 million to Chelsea.
Caicedo’s future has been a hot topic over the summer with Chelsea have multiple bids rejected for him.
Albion maintained their stance or them not selling the 21-year-old for any less than their value. This become clearer when Declan Rice joined Arsenal for £105 million last month, with reports suggesting the Seagulls value him Caicedo at the same price as Rice.
Last Tuesday, Brighton’s technical director David Weir told Sky Sports they ‘have not had an acceptable offer’ for Caicedo.
However, Liverpool who have been linked with Caicedo over the last year stepped up their pursuit of the Ecuadorian international and on Thursday night had their British record £110 million bid accepted by the Seagulls.
However Caicedo preferred to join Chelsea and the Blues then came in with another bid on Sunday night of £115 million which was accepted.
Chelsea’s bid beats the previous British record of £106 million that they paid for Enzo Fernandez in January.
That £115 million means Brighton have made over £350 million in player sales in the last two years on Caicedo, Robert Sanchez, Alexis Mac Allister, Leandro Trossard, Neal Maupay, Dan Burn, Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma and Ben White.
The big question now is how will Brighton cope without Caicedo and who will be Albion’s midfield duo.
James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud lined up together in the win over Luton on Saturday . However there is plenty of competition in that area with Billy Gilmour, Pascal Gross, Adam Lallana and Steven Alzate all competing for a place in the middle of the park.
However manager Roberto De Zerbi has already stated he is looking for a replacement, which looks like it could be Lille midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The 19-year-old is believed to be valued at around £20 million.
Baleba made 22 appearances for Lille last season.
